Russia is intensifying glide bomb attacks on Ukrainian defenses. Oleh Synyehubov, governor of the Kharkiv region, said last week that Russia was using glide bombs in attacks on that part of the front line. They said, according to the ISW, that Russia is seeking to mass produce the FAB-1500-M54 guided glide bomb and increase its use on the front line. Konrad Muzyka, director of the Poland-based Rochan defense consultancy, told The Washington Post that Russia was launching up to 100 glide bomb attacks a day. AdvertisementUkraine also has a glide bomb in its arsenal, the US-made JDAM, but reports say that Russian electronic warfare units have been able to intercept the bombs.

Oct 29 (Reuters) - Schools will move to an online regime starting Monday in Ukraine's central city of Vinnytsia after a Hepatitis A outbreak sent scores of children and adults to the hospital, the country's chief sanitary official said over the weekend. Kuzin, who also serves as Ukraine's deputy health minister, said 141 people in the city and the region were in a hospital. Vinnytsia, which had a pre-war population of around 370,000, is the administrative centre of the Vinnytsia region in central Ukraine. "So far, there is no single cause of the outbreak," Kuzin said. "We are analyzing the centers of spread and are working with the population, in particular to establish a circle of contact persons."

Trump's longtime finance chief, Allen Weisselberg, acknowledged in testimony Tuesday that information in the financial statements wasn't always accurate. The disclaimers say, among other things, that the financial statements aren't audited and that others “might reach different conclusions” about Trump's financial position if they had more information. It’s the first time a bank official has testified in court about the impact Trump’s financial statements had on his ability to obtain loans. Haigh said he reviewed Trump’s financial statements before approving the loans and, at the time, had no reason to doubt their validity. “I assumed that the representations of the assets and liabilities were broadly accurate," Haigh said of Trump’s financial statements.

The nationwide online poll, which concluded on Thursday, showed that almost 30% of respondents were very interested in getting the vaccine and another 24% were somewhat interested. U.S. public health officials earlier this week recommended updated COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer (PFE.N)/BioNTech (22UAy.DE) and Moderna (MRNA.O) that target a recently circulating Omicron variant of the coronavirus. Almost 42% said they were mainly interested in getting the vaccine to reduce their risk of severe illness. During the last revaccination campaign, when most Americas had either already had the COVID virus or been previously vaccinated, only around 56.5 million people got the updated booster shots, CDC data shows. The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online and nationwide between Sept. 8 and Sept. 14, gathering responses from 4,413 U.S. adults.

July 24 (Reuters) - UK battery startup Nexeon will supply high-energy silicon anode material to Panasonic’s (6752.T) newest U.S. plant starting in 2025, the companies said on Monday. The use of silicon-rich anodes will enable Panasonic battery cells to store more energy and charge more quickly, the companies said. The greater energy density also gives Panasonic the option of making smaller, lighter packs with similar range to current battery cells. Abingdon-based Nexeon will supply the material to Panasonic Energy Co’s $4 billion De Soto, Kansas plant, which is slated to open in early 2025. Founded in 2006, Nexeon has raised more than $260 million and was most recently valued at $350 million, according to investor website PitchBook.com.

SEOUL, July 21 (Reuters) - When U.S. soldier Travis King sprinted across the border into North Korea from the South this week, he disappeared into a North Korea where lingering COVID-19 concerns and restrictions have made the already secretive country more isolated than ever. Officials in Washington said North Korea had yet to give any response through a number of channels, including at the United Nations. North Korean border guards fatally shot and burned the body of a South Korean fisheries official near their disputed maritime border in 2020. North Korean guards at the site still shelter inside buildings, apparently to avoid the risk of catching COVID. But North Korea often seeks meetings with high-level American officials before any releases, and that could be complicated by their worries over COVID, he added.

She was among some 40 other tourists who were walking around and taking photos in the moments before King made a dash to North Korea. "I don't think anyone who was sane would want to go to North Korea, so I assumed it was some kind of stunt," she told Reuters. North Korea is likely to milk the border crossing by a U.S. soldier for propaganda purposes but will probably not be able to gain political leverage, analysts and a former North Korean diplomat said. The notable exception was U.S. college student Otto Warmbier, who died in 2017 shortly after being released from a North Korea prison. Still, analysts suggested that King's stay in North Korea could be lengthy.

Analysts said discussions over the soldier's fate could see some of the first diplomatic engagement between North Korea and the United States in years. "I do not think North Korea views the latest incident as strong leverage or an opportunity to engage the U.S.," she said. "North Korea knows that the U.S. government is unlikely to change its North Korea policy or its commitment to U.S. extended deterrence because of one U.S. soldier who reportedly faced disciplinary action and wilfully crossed into North Korea." "Their conditions are better not only than the average North Korean prisoner, but of the average North Korean citizen." North Korean border guards fatally shot and burned the body of a South Korean fisheries official in 2020, and later leader Kim Jong Un ordered an entire city into lockdown when a North Korean crossed back into the country from the South.

SK Signet to launch EV chargers with Tesla's charging standard
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
June 15 (Reuters) - Electric-vehicle (EV) charger maker SK Signet (260870.KN) said on Thursday it was adding products compatible with the North American Charging Standard (NACS), after major U.S. automakers Ford (F.N) and GM (GM.N) said they were adopting Tesla's (TSLA.O) model of charging. Electric vehicle charging companies are cautiously embracing Tesla's charging technology as the main U.S. standard, as they are in danger of losing out on customers if they offer only the Combined Charging System (CCS). Earlier this week, EV charging equipment makers Blink Charging (BLNK.O), ChargePoint (CHPT.N) and Tritium (DCFC.O) said they will offer chargers with Tesla's connector. The White House aims to spur deployment of hundreds of thousands of chargers, which it sees as integral to EV adoption. SK Signet will continue to provide customers with the option of other widely used standards for EV charger connections, including the CCS, CHAdeMO and the Megawatt Charging System.

WHO recommends new COVID shots should target only XBB variants
  + stars: | 2023-05-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
May 18 (Reuters) - A World Health Organization (WHO) advisory group on Thursday recommended that this year's COVID-19 booster shots be updated to target one of the currently dominant XBB variants. New formulations should aim to produce antibody responses to the XBB.1.5 or XBB.1.16 variants, the advisory group said, adding that other formulations or platforms that achieve neutralizing antibody responses against XBB lineages could also be considered. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is also set to hold a meeting of outside experts in June to discuss the strain compositions of COVID-19 shots for later this year; vaccine manufacturers will be expected to update their shots once the strains are selected. The bivalent booster shots developed and distributed last year targeted two different strains - the Omicron variant as well as the original virus. WHO's advisory group, which recommends if changes are needed to the composition of future COVID-19 shots, said currently approved vaccines should continue to be used in accordance with the agency's recommendations.
The offer of COVID vaccination for very young children is voluntary and specifically targeted to children who are most at risk from COVID, according to the government’s April announcement of the new policy. After Britain’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) recommended that young children in clinical risk groups should be offered COVID vaccination, some social media users responded with outrage. JCVI ADVICEThe UK advice does not include all young children. In fact, the prioritisation of COVID-19 vaccination for clinically vulnerable children explains higher mortality rates seen during the pandemic among vaccinated children as compared with unvaccinated children (here and here). There is no evidence the vaccine is unsafe for infants and young children, according to experts and health regulators.
In this article .FKRX300 Follow your favorite stocks CREATE FREE ACCOUNTwatch nowSouth Korean chipmaker SK Hynix has reported a record quarterly operating loss of 3.4 trillion won ($2.54 billion) for the first quarter of the year. This is a reversal from the 2.84 trillion won operating profit in the same period last year, and a larger loss from the the 1.89 trillion won operating loss the previous quarter. Employees stand in front of the SK Hynix Inc. logo displayed at the company's office in Seongnam, South Korea, on Monday, July 24, 2017. Shares of SK Hynix were higher by 1.75% in afternoon trade after surging as much as 3.5% earlier Wednesday. "We expect revenues to rebound in the second quarter after bottoming out in the first, driven by a gradual increase in sales volume," SK Hynix also said.
The firm's loss widened as a global economic slowdown worsened a memory chip glut during the first quarter, prompting sluggish demand and falling prices, SK Hynix said. However, "we expect revenue to rebound in the second quarter after bottoming out in the first, driven by a gradual increase in sales volume," SK Hynix said. Such cuts will reduce inventory across the industry and improve market conditions from the current quarter, SK Hynix said. The loss is the biggest since SK Group acquired Hynix in 2012, and is the second in a row after the fourth quarter's 1.9 trillion won loss. SK Hynix shares traded up 2.1% versus a 0.2% decline in the wider market (.KS11), after the firm flagged a market rebound.
US chip subsidy criteria could be a 'burden', says South Korea

Samsung is building a chip plant in Texas that could cost over $25 billion and has said it is reviewing the guidelines. However, funding applications may require detailed cost structure information as well as projected wafer yields, utilisation rates and price changes, which three Korean chip sources told Reuters was akin to revealing corporate strategy. The United States' subsidy provisions should reflect the opinions of the government and companies of South Korea so they do not impose any undue burden on those companies, South Korean Trade Minister Ahn Duk-geun said in a statement on Thursday. Ahn's comment came from a meeting with United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai in South Korea, a leading chipmaking country and major investor in the U.S. chip sector. The U.S. Department of Commerce will accept subsidy applications for leading-edge chip facilities from March 31, and for current-generation, mature-node and back-end production facilities from June 26.
WHO revises COVID-19 vaccine recommendations for Omicron-era

[1/2] A 50 years old and immunocompromised resident receives a second booster shot of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine in Waterford, Michigan, U.S., April 8, 2022. The health agency defined high-risk populations as older adults, as well as younger people with other significant risk factors. Meanwhile, it said healthy children and adolescents were "low priority" for COVID-19 vaccination, and urged countries to consider factors like disease burden before recommending vaccination of this group. It said the COVID-19 vaccines and boosters were safe for all ages, but the recommendations took into account other factors like cost-effectiveness. Some high-income countries like the United Kingdom and Canada are already offering those at high-risk COVID-19 boosters this spring, six months after their last dose.
The U.S. Commerce Department on Tuesday proposed limits for recipients of U.S. chip manufacturing and research funding, including limits on investing in expansion in countries such as China and Russia. The world's largest and second-largest memory-chip makers, Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) and SK Hynix (000660.KS), have chip production facilities in China. Samsung is building a chip plant in Texas that could cost more than $25 billion, while SK Hynix parent SK Group announced last year plans to invest $15 billion in the U.S. chip industry. The proposed rules for funding recipients limit chip production capacity growth in China to 5% over 10 years as measured by wafers, and 10% for older legacy chips, the trade ministry said. Samsung and SK Hynix said they would review the details of the announcement.
